Developing a Sustainable Smart University: A Novel Model in Education and Research

| As centers of knowledge creation and dissemination, universities play a pivotal role in sustainable development and the education of future generations. Given contemporary environmental and social challenges, higher education institutions must transition toward smart and sustainable models, as environmental sustainability is fundamentally embedded within the discourse of sustainable smart universities. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to explore the development and implementation of sustainable smart universities, along with their associated benefits and barriers. To this end, this study examines the conceptual framework and characteristics of the sustainable smart university, its advantages, potential obstacles, strategies for development and implementation, as well as smart learning models and their opportunities and challenges within sustainable smart academic contexts, concluding with a comprehensive synthesis. Based on the synthesis presented in this research, sustainable smart universities can serve as a novel educational and research model to address environmental and social challenges. However, achieving this vision requires strategic investments in technology, capacity building, and cultural development. |
